Avoid breakouts while travelling (3 hacks)

These skin care hacks will change how you travel and prevent the dreadful acne that can come from travelling in public places. Here are 3 simple hacks that will help to keep you skin clear and healthy when you are on the road or catching a flight. This post covers:

  • What to drink

  • What to eat

  • How to take care of skin while travelling

  • Your mindset surrounding your skin

I’ve always loved traveling since I was a little girl. But for years I couldn’t step on a plane or train without getting a pimple. :( Even when I got a better handle on my skin, I would still get them. It would even ruin some of my trips! Nothing is worse than not feeling cute for vacation pics or spending time on your vacation looking in the mirror trying to hide a blemish. It took a lot of trial and error but I have figured it out! These tips are non-negotiables whenever I travel these days and guarantee that I arrive to my destination with clear, healthy skin.

1. Drink Water

On any trip I go on I chug water, like constantly. When you get past security, buy water or fill up your water bottle. Make sure you have a full water before getting on the flight and try to finish it before the end of the flight, no matter how long. I think this is the biggest thing that keeps me from getting pimples and keeps my energy up. And yes, I have to pee constantly but who cares and I take advantage of the time in the bathrooms to wash my hands. This also helps with pimples because you are exposed to so much there is not enough hand washing. I try to always sit in the aisle seat but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I used to be embarrassed to ask to get up and pee multiple times if I was in the middle or window seat and it would stress me out and make the flight unbearable. Get that out of your head, and don’t be afraid to get up and go pee again. Who cares! And when you get to your hotel or destination, keep drinking more and more water. This also will help you sleep better when navigating time changes and lets you take on that extra caffeine without feeling like you’re going to pass out.

2. Do not eat free plane snacks

Refuse all snacks they give you for free. They are filled with salt and sugar that will make you bloated when you get to your destination and give you pimples. I know they are free but don’t do it. Also do not buy chips and candy for the trip. Pack healthy snacks from home and if you can’t I recommend fruit cups, healthy granola bars, dried fruit, nuts, berries, or whatever you can find that’s moderately healthy. My go tos are macro bars because they are pretty filling and have super healthy clean ingredients. They can be found at most grocery stores but are harder to find in gas stations or airports. I know it’s hard once you get to a destination to not have some fun treats, but at least avoid these items when travelling.

3. No makeup

This can be tough, but if you are comfortable, try wearing no makeup at all when flying. Also avoid touching your face. Just being hyper aware of not touching your face will save you. When you dress up a little more but don’t wear makeup, a bare face is less noticeable. I think it helps to not get more dirt and germs on your face. Even if I have to go straight to the airport from a work thing, I will take off my makeup in the airport bathroom. The only makeup remover I ever trust is micellar water. Another hack is to pack eye drops, toothbrush, and toothpaste in your carry-on. Life saver for those international flights or anytime you get off of a plane and just feel disgusting. Brushing your teeth and taking the redness out of your eyes will make you feel like a new person.

The most important hack, is your mind

I know it can be stressful before a trip just worrying about your skin and if your acne will flare up. Stress is another factor to not forget! Try your best to not get too caught up with worrying before a trip. At the end of the day your mindset really is the most important. The story we tell ourselves has more weight on the outcome of an event than anything physical we can do. What we believe will always come true. Think positive thoughts about your skin and it will make all the difference. Once I realized the power I had in my mind, it changed everything. My skin was so bad I wouldn’t leave the house without make-up and even that wouldn’t cover it up. My best friends noticed it was so bad they even sat me down and kindly suggested I go to the doctor and get a prescription. I read about manifestation and thought before I actually get medication I’m going to try and manifest clear skin. At this point I had nothing to lose. I really believed I could heal myself from the inside out and gave it my best shot. It wasn’t an overnight success but with time I completely healed my skin.

These are the little things I do that help control my acne when travelling. It’s so important to be intentional with what you drink, what you eat, and what you put on your face while travelling. The smallest things really do make the biggest difference.

Hope this is helpful for someone out there! If you’re trying to get to the root cause of your acne, check out the quiz below and find out.
